File download servlet does not work on ie8

 · I m using content disposition to download pdf file from my servlet. My code works fine for chrome, firefox and IE but the problem is when I try to download pdf file using opera, it removes pdf extension and adds htm. The following is my code.  · Problem: While IE 7 - Tools - Internet Options - Security - Custom Level - Downloads - Automatic prompting for file downloads is Disabled and while pop-up window get opened, I am unable to download the file (Save/Open prompt is not comming up). In contrast, when I enable this option, I am able to download.  · When I execute the same Servlet over HTTPS only firefox continues to download the csv file over HTTPS. I don't think this is necessarily an Internet 6 or 7 issue described on MSDN: The message is: Internet Explorer cannot download bltadwin.ru from bltadwin.ru Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site.

Can't download files in Internet Explorer. Archived Forums When i start Google Chrome with normal user rights, no problem downloads are working fine. I also found no difference in the User GPO when i compare the Group Policy Results of my normal user and my Admin User on the same machine. Thanks for the quick response. Both the browser network monitor and Fiddler say the same thing as the IDE - no request is sent to the servlet. Without getting too philosophical, the browsers are the only client side code here. I think I was hoping for some obscure browser setting to explain why IE11 and Edge don't work and the other browsers do. Archive files like zip, tar, gzip etc. will always be downloaded. Some file types show up in some browsers but not others depending on if the browser can read the file or not. For example, Internet Explorer (IE) will usually try to show Microsoft Word files (doc and docx) in the browser, while most other browsers will download it.

@ScottMorrison, I don't think you can change that behavior programatically, but if you have a Visualforce page rendered as a PDF you can set 'content-disposition' header on the Visualforce page to determine what the browser does with it and there are also settings under "Setup" "Security" "File Upload and Download Security" to change how certain file extensions are handled by default. This Java tutorial describes the steps to write code for a Java servlet that transfers a file from the server to the client (web browser). The user can download the file by clicking on a hyperlink which points to the servlet URL. This would be useful for implementing file download functionality in your web application using Java servlet.
